This weekend, I plan to sand the nasty blackness off of the living room ceiling beams and the upstairs collar ties. I tried to do so the other night with my spanking new $79 DeWalt orbital palm sander, but it wasn’t tough enough. After watching some how-to vids on youtube, I realized that what I needed was a belt sander, a hard-working fast-moving tool for really stripping things down. So yesterday I went to Lowe’s and picked up a $59 Black & Decker belt sander and some 40 grit belts.

Now I’m back on youtube for tips on how to use the thing. The first two videos I looked at were pretty funny because the two guys could not be more different. Check it out:

Today we met with Ben to go over the final estimate for the renovation. We were stunned to learn that the cost of everything–framing, insulation, plumbing, drywall, ¬†electricity, and carpentry–will be almost double the original estimate. And that doesn’t include fixtures or tile for the bathroom, flooring for the kitchen and Sadie’s room, paint, or kitchen cabinets and/or countertops. Oh, and we won’t be moving in until November 1.

We were so dismayed by the news that we couldn’t bring ourselves to do anything productive last night. Instead, we watched “The Money Pit” and laughed. Sort of. The jokes were a little too close to home.
